ICOSAHEDRON

Literka hopes that this page will give a better idea on how a regular icosahedron is built. Let us remind that icosahedron is a Plato's polyhedron, a regular polyhedron of 20 faces. All faces are equilateral triangles. We can divide icosahedron into three parts. First and third part have the same outlook. They look like an UFO.

This UFO is a polyhedron of 6 faces. The base of UFO is a regular polygon, say polygon W, of 5 sides. Other 5 faces are equilateral triangles having one common side with W.

Second part reminds a drum.

The bottom and the top of this drum are the same looking regular polygons of 5 sides. Between bottom and top there are 10 faces, which are equilateral triangles. They join bottom with a top.

If we place two UFOs on a drum: one on the top, one on the bottom, we shall receive a regular icosahedron – a Plato’s polyhedron of 20 faces (picture on the top of this page).
